Summary of the Passage

This passage tells a story about people who wanted to follow Jesus. In the Bible, Jesus traveled to many places to teach people about God. Some people wanted to follow him and learn from him.

One man said he would follow Jesus everywhere. But Jesus explained that following him would be hard. He said that animals like foxes and birds have homes, but Jesus did not have a place to rest. This meant that following Jesus is not always easy or comfortable.

Jesus asked another man to follow him. But the man wanted to go bury his father first. Jesus told him to let the dead people bury their own dead. In those days, this could mean the father had just died, or it might mean the man wanted to stay home until his father passed away one day in the future. Jesus said this to show that telling people about God’s kingdom is the most important job. He wanted the man to choose a spiritual life first.

Another person wanted to follow Jesus too but asked to say good-bye to his family first. Jesus said that if someone starts to plow a field and keeps looking back, they cannot do their work well. He meant that followers of Jesus need to stay focused and not let other things get in the way.

This passage teaches us that following Jesus is the most important thing. It shows us that we should not let excuses or other plans stop us from doing what God wants.

Read The Passage

Most English learners should use the Easy-to-Read Version (ERV), the New International Reader’s Version (NIRV), or the Good News Translation (GNT). If you want to try something harder, you can read one of the other Bible versions.

Following Jesus
57 They were all traveling along the road.
Someone said to Jesus,
“I will follow you anywhere you go.”
58 He answered,
“The foxes have holes to live in.
The birds have nests.
But the Son of Man has no place where he can rest his head.”
59 Jesus said to another man,
“Follow me!”
But the man said,
“Lord, let me go and bury my father first.”
60 But Jesus said to him,
“Let the people who are dead bury their own dead.
You must go and tell about God’s kingdom.”
61 Another man said,
“I will follow you, Lord, but first let me go and say goodbye to my family.”
62 Jesus said,
“Anyone who begins to plow a field but looks back is not prepared for God’s kingdom.”
