Summary of the Passage

This passage tells about a time when Jesus spoke to his twelve closest friends. These men were called apostles. They were traveling together to a big city called Jerusalem. Jesus wanted to talk to them alone. He had something very important to tell them. He said that everything the prophets wrote about the Son of Man would happen soon.

Jesus said they were going to Jerusalem. There, something very sad would happen to him. He would be handed over to foreigners. These foreigners were people from a different country who ruled the land, the Romans. Jesus said these men would laugh at him and insult him. They would even spit on him to show they had no respect. Then, they would beat him with whips and kill him.

Jesus also told his friends some wonderful news. He said that three days after his death, he would rise to life again! This was the most important part of God’s plan to save people from sin.

The apostles tried to understand what Jesus was saying. They could not understand because the meaning of his words was hidden from them. They did not know how their leader could die and then live again.

This passage teaches us that God had a plan for Jesus. It reminds us that even when life is hard or confusing, God’s good plan is still at work.

Jesus Talks Again About His Death
31 Then Jesus talked to the twelve apostles alone.
He said to them,
“Listen, we are going to Jerusalem.
Everything that God told the prophets to write about the Son of Man will happen.
32 He will be handed over to the foreigners, who will laugh at him, insult him, and spit on him.
33 They will beat him with whips and then kill him.
But on the third day after his death, he will rise to life again.”
34 The apostles tried to understand this, but they could not; the meaning was hidden from them.
