Loving People Who Sin

Loving people who keep doing bad things is one of the hardest things for followers of Jesus to do. It tests our patience. It tests our pride. It shows where our kindness ends. But it also gives us a chance to remember God’s grace to us. God never stops showing us mercy, even when we are stubborn. This prayer helps us confess our struggles. It helps us thank God for his endless patience. It helps us ask for loving hearts so we can point others to Jesus.

Dear Father,

It is so hard to love people who keep choosing sin. Yet, you love me all the time when I sin! You are holy and pure. You are separate from all wrong things, but you are full of mercy and patience. You do not get angry quickly, and your love never ends. Jesus died for us while we were still sinners! You did not wait for us to make our lives clean first. You came to us in our mess and covered us with grace.

I confess that I often forget how much grace you give me. I get impatient with people who sin in different ways than I do. I want other people to change right away, but I forget how long you have worked to change my heart! I am quick to say mean things, slow to listen, and slow to love. Please forgive me for the times I spoke the truth without kindness. Forgive me for staying silent when I should have spoken truth in love. Forgive me for treating people like job projects instead of real people made by you who need mercy, just like me.

1 Peter 4:8 (ERV) says, “Most important of all, love each other deeply, because love makes you willing to forgive many sins.” Thank you for never giving up on me! Thank you for your amazing patience. Thank you for putting people in my life who loved me when I was difficult, stubborn, or lost. Thank you for your word in 1 Peter. It reminds me that you saved me from sin so I can serve others with love, not judge them. Thank you for giving me good gifts to use for your glory. Thank you for giving me power to live a new life through your grace.

Please help me now, Lord. Help me know when to speak and when to be quiet. Help me show your kindness when I talk to people who do not know you. Help me remember that your kindness helps people stop sinning, not my angry words or arguments. Let me be brave without being mean. Let me speak truth without being cruel. Let me show kindness without agreeing with sin. Let my love make other people want to know the God I follow.

When I must talk about sin with a friend or look at the sin in my own heart, help me do it like Jesus. Jesus came full of grace and truth. Shape me, correct me, and use me to show your mercy to others.
